9 because the gcf of 36 is 1,2,3,4,6,9,12,18,36
and then the gcf of 27 is 1,3,9,27
the gcf for both is 9

27= 3 x 3 x 3
36= 2 x 2 x 3 x 3
---------------------
Now identify the common factors and determine GCF
27= [3 x 3] x 3
36= 2 x 2 x [3 x 3]

Therefore
GCF= 3 x 3 = 9
